Plastic menu options!! One of my many favorite things about Korea, you can see what you want...AND the food looks like what you order. When I was in China, I'd order things that NEVER looked like their picture.

A really spicey fish stew/soup, Amy said it's amazing. So omnivores...go for it!!

 Cute baby shoes!!!

This was super good, a rice bun with sweet red beans inside. It was only 1500W ($1.00 US) and filling, sweet, and served warm!!

Amy and I split one!!
Dondaemun and Nangdaemun was so much fun, and I have a lot to credit Amy for that. Saw a lot of things, spent a lot of money (eeep) and left with some great buys!!

A field trip to the National Korean museum and my Kimbop skills*!~

photo taken by VeganBeats

The other day we had a field trip!!! Myself and two other teachers piled seven energetic kids into a bus and we drove for an hour to Korean National Museum, it was HUGE!!! The kids who were filled with boat loads of energy in the beginning were now tired and hungry, an hour car ride does that to you...I nearly fell asleep. Anyways the first program we had set up was a reading class and craft shop where they learned the "birth" of Korea. It was all in Korean so from what I understand, there was a tiger and a bear, and the bear had to eat moss for a month straight, and only moss...after a month of this diet the bear turned into a human and gave birth to a god, who was the fatherof Korea. Here are my students!! Don't they look stoked?!!

photo taken by VeganBeats
After this we went to an activity museum (the childrens section) where they all got to see the old villages that Koreans used to live in, along with the tools the people used to make rice, farm, weave, etc. There were some cool exhibits where the kids could retrace the old drawings and carvings...These two girls are such sweethearts. I have another pic of the two of them but their eyes are squeezed shut so tightly!!

photo taken by VeganBeats
We also rocked out some of the King's crowns!! This little guy we call Baby...he thinks it's his real name!! eeep

The kids got tired out quickly, we took them to a nearby park and had kimbop, played on the playground...then after a couple more hours of teaching I went home and tested out my kimbop skills....developing they are*!~
These were made with soybean Sprouts, sesame leaves, kimchi (that I made!!!) burdok root, cucumber, pickled daikon, spinach...just a lot of stuff!!!

Anyways, off to another day of teaching....two more days until my weekend!! Casino then shopping...*!~

Some 콩국수 Kongguksu and 김밥 kimbop

The other day while running errands, it slipped my mind I was so weak and tired. I was out of the house since 7am just exploring, wandering, people watching, kicking it really, it was nearing 3, I hadn't eaten and all my stuff was really wearing me out. Fuel, needed fuel.
I stopped at a food court *I cringe at this...but food courts are not nearly the same as American ones...* Scrolling through all the Korean I know (not much) I managed to say "I can't eat meat, chicken, fish, or egg, I have an allergy, I cannot eat meat, chicken, fish or egg." This super sweet ajuma hooked me up with the summer dish of Kong-guk-su.

photo taken by VeganBeats

I didn't touch the kimchi, who knows if there was baby shrimp or fish in it, but the kong-guk-su really hit the spot! It was cool, healthy, and a hint of salty. It was served with a side dish of salt and of course the kimchi. And this was a HUGE portion, I paid 3500W, about $3 USdollars.

Later that night, again I did the same thing. Forgot to refuel. Was cleaning my apartment, writing, reading, and more wandering...my stomach started lurching and then it hit me...so I stopped into this tiny place across the street from me called "KIMBOP." Kimbop is seasoned vegetables and meats all wrapped in rice and kim/laver, It is similar to sushi, except the vegetables aren't raw, everything is cooked and prepped....and yummy!
The ajashi who owned the place was really kind and when I explained to him my dietary lifestyle in as much broken Korean as I could muster, he let me point to what I wanted in my kimbop. I brought some of my own kimchi with me and he hooked me up! I got yaetchae (vegetable) kimbop and my own kimchi kimbop.
The kimchi kimbop was sooo good, he put in some sesame leaves so there was an extra tang to it, I love sesame leaves so...as embarassing as it is I couldn't hide my excitment and let out a small yelp of happiness. This ajashi laughed at me too much, but hooked me up. I only spent 4000W for all this and he even gave me some extra veggies! So only about $3.50ish US Dollars.

Must remember to refuel...and luckily I found some extra spots that my vegan tummy can tolerate!

I leave you with a sign I found at the subway...

Oh Sae Gye Hyang, 오 세계향

Friday marked the end of a stressful week, I love my students and my coworkers, but there is no denying I wanted time to just...not be watched. I've been spending a lot of time with myself, and as stressful as that usually is, I actually had a good time, but I was looking forward to kicking it with some good people...and of course I'm fortunate enough to have Jaxs also in Seoul!!! Jaxs and I have been best friends since sixteen and we parted ways in college but still reconnected via phone, facebook, and vacations...now we're across the world, in the same city together!! Jaxs is a vegetarian and has been much better introduced to the vegan restos in the area...We decided to meet in Insadong and check out a new place! Oh ahd this was my first time tackling the subway system free of guide...proud to say I didn't get lost once!!

Insadong is very busy, very cute...there was a street right off of the station full of so many shops, food stands, clothing, etc...but the resto we went to was nestled in a very cute area that branched off of the busy shopping street. It loked like tradiational Korea, quiet, old style buildings...cozy.

photo taken by VeganBeats

The resto we went to is pronounced Oh-sae-gae-hyang, I am so glad we went here!
Seating is traditional, so low tables, thin cushions and fake flowered filled tables. I remember as a child going to other Korean households and thinking the tables were so silly. They are very classy and clearly expensive, and with a glass section on top and always inside, there are these cheap brightly colored fake flowers...

Anyways, right away we were served some rice tea and Jaxs and I were immediatley overwhelmed with what we should order. We decided on several things..I am so glad I went with someone. If I had gone alone, I'd have so much to bring back with me.
We decided to order the vegetarian barbeque with rice (8000W). This dish was very flavorful, a little sweet too. It was texturized vegetable protein cut thinly like bulgogi and was served with slabs of king oyster mushrooms on top. The rice was actually purple bean rice, pretty, flavorful, and much healthier than white rice!!

photo taken by VeganBeats

We went for the hot soup with vegetables and mushrooms (7000W), similar to kimchi jigae! We haven't been able to have ANY soups here because everyone uses fish, beef, or chicken stock...and I LOVE kimchi Jigae...
This was my favorite dish, there were chunks of turnip that maintained shape but help so much flavor and fell apart in your mouth. There was a gradual heat in the broth that made Jaxs and I feel healthier and awake. Seriously!!! There were lots of enoki mushrooms that gave a very good texture, similar to noodles, but healthier! The cabbage was a kiss of sweet, just a great dish, I'm taking the hour long subway ride JUST for this soup.

photo taken by VeganBeats

The next thing we ordered was vegetable mandu (7000W) This is purely a trip down memory lane for Jaxs and I. In highschool she would come over and my mother, her and myself would just kick it and make vegan mandu from scratch. It was the first Korean dish she ever had...This was super tasty! The filling was solid enough that it didn't fall apart...if you've ever made mandu before, the filling and the preperation are very important. IF there is too much liquid you can't fill the wrap that much, the mandu doesn't stay closed, it cooked unevenly..etc etc etc. This was full of flavor, so many textures.

The entire meal came with a lot of banchan (Korean small side dishes) and they were all amazing. The server came out with a platter full of greens, such as baby romaine, dandelion greens, and sesame leaves. This is used to wrap the rice and kimchi or barbeque protein/etc and eat in one bite. I always like digging into what I'm eating, and I love lettuce, so my eyes were feasting with this greens platter! We also got some lotus root, spicey mushrooms, kimchi, seaweed and cucumber, spinach and soy, bean sauce, chajang, and soy sauce. (cucumber seaweed top left, lotus root in the middle, spicey mushrooms bottom left)

This is the spread (apologies for fuzzy pictures.)There were a lot of people int he resuraunt also, and the owners were so kind. Turns out they own the vegan chain resturaunts throughout Seoul, Loving Hut.
I highly recommend this place, it only was 22000W (about $20 US) and such good quality food. My body was so thankful after this, I had energy, felt sprite! It's near Anguk station of Line 3. This is their website if you want to check it out!!

All in all a Wonderful experience, tackled the subway line, had some wonderful food, and reconnected with Jaxs...I already feel the Seoul searching in action!!!

Seoul Stands*!~

photo taken by VeganBeats
All along the streets there are stands selling all sorts of things, even though in the US there are these types of shops it somehow is so much more interesting and novel because I'm here. There is a copious amount of fruit stands, which I LOVE!! Persimmons and giant apples are at every corner, there are boxes of grapes, and everything is reasonabley priced in comparison to in the market. Or for what produce is now. The produce has been suffering this season in Korea so all prices are very inflated.

The other night I met up with Jaxs in Insadong and went to a vegan resturaunt, but that's for another post. Insadong was so much nusier than my Nowon. Tons of people, tons of foreigners, lots of shopping, tea shops, etc. Super cute, super busy...this is a stand owned by a Halmuni, she was selling nut bars and rice cakes, and dduk...
Everything here was vegan too! All made with a TON of suger, but none the less...pure tasty energy.

Anyways, I'm off to do some more exploring. Peace, love, and good times only*!~

First meal out in Seoul....

The go to meal...the cheap easy eats that everyone in Korea calls to when in a rush, on the go, or just something simple. Like the US grilled cheese, we've got bibimbop.

My coworkers and I went out after a long day and we went to this literal hole in the wall, owned by a halmuni and harabagi...here's my dish:

There wasn't a wide variety of vegetable banchan they added to this, just kimchi, bean sprouts, zucchini banchan, and kim. Then of course kochujuang!! Usually som ebeef strips and egg is served with this.

My coworkers got the same except there was one mondu guksu.

In Seoul...my halmuni spoils me!!!

So just wrapped up my first week living in Seoul...strangely I feel so at ease and very comfortable. There's a steadiness to my life here so far. I spend most of my time wandering and exploring my home in Nowon...thankfully I'm discovering more everyday.

Luckily my family lives throughout Seoul, my sumcheon and emo helped me move in and my halmuni spoiled me. She made my favorite dishes that brought me straight back to my childhood. Here's the amazing eats I've been having... I am not sure what they are called, just halmuni's love*!~

Some vegan cabbage Kimchi I broughto overseas with me, my mom and I spent SO much time making this. I brought about fifty pounds of this!!!

All together now, with a bit of bap (rice!!!) This stuff is so good on it's own, not hot sauce required.

Thank you Halmuni!

Have more to catch up on...WILL get to it.
