Loving Hut: Hannam

On Sunday Sean, Kia, and I tried to hit up Garobee but UGh~~it was closed!!! So we ended up going to the Loving Hut in Hannam. ...

The interior was cute, and so quiet. We ended up nomming alone!
I really enjoyed the wide open windows...

The menu is not listed with loads of offers, there are staple plates like 비빔밥 (bibimbap) and 킁가스 (donkas). It's small, so for something quick and cheap, this place doesn't disappoint. I think if I was hoping for more options, other Loving Huts would be the go to's.
Kia and Sean are so knowledgable about loads of things, but they also know about what's worth nomming on and not. I went with their recommendation and got the 순수채 킁가스 (soonsuchae donkas, 5,000W) which is a flaky fried soy meat patty served with rice, pickles, sweet potato mousse, and a salad. I'm not for fried things usually but this was pretty good. It was crunchy, flavorful, and paired well with the tomatoe sauce it was served with.

Sean went with the 쌀주물럭 쌈밥정식 (Ssaljumuloek Ssambabjeongsik, 8,000W).This was mirroring 불고기 and came with loads of greens and 반찬! I gave Sean my rice because...eh you know!

The time for 빙수 is ending...I didn't indulge on enough of it! We grabbed one of these and ugh, what have I been missing out on! The blend of sweet fruits, pillowy 떡, crunchy ice flakes and sweet beans...I don't care...I'm making it an Autumn staple.

The food as always is inexpensive, satisfying and tasty. If you want more options, stray from here...but worth the wander!

Map this out to find it (desciribing is proving more complicated)

Ho Chi Minh city (Saigon): Saigon Vegan

Up early in the morning, just before the heat caught up to the heavy air, Ani and I took a ride to Hanoi's airport for our flight with jetstar for our flight to Ho Chi Minh city. We were only planning to stay for one night and then head via train to Mui Ne!
Saigon for some reason has always struck me as an exotic and famous location, a destination that everyone must go to. Maybe through films, twin references, or general word of mouth...Saigon (Ho Chi Minh city) was in the stars.
Jetstar is a very inexpensive air line that takes you essentially anywhere for more than decent prices...but you get what you pay for. Not the most comfortable of seats (though we lucked out with the roomy exit seats) and minimal service. Our several hour long flight was absent of water, tea, and coffee. Similar tot he China town buses going in between New York and Boston, it helps you get to where you want to go on a budget.
Once we landed we wandered over to the backpackers district and went hostel to hostel, hotel to vacant rooms looking at spaces, bargaining prices...trying to find something decent, inexpensive and above all clean. I think we looked at maybe eight places before we settled on Hong Han Hotel, clean inside and a roomy space for $20 a night. Breakfast wa included and Ahn (brother) had great English and people skills, he honestly sealed the deal.
The room had two comfy beds, air conditioning, cable tv, a fridge, clean bathroom, and a viranda/balcony where breakfast was going to be served. There was also free internet and skype access along with a super helpful staff. Tired and hungy...sold.

If you are planning on kicking it in Ho Chi Minh City, I HIGHLY recommend staying at Hong Han!!
Bonus, next door was Saigon Vegan, a loving hut chain...working up an apetite (didn't eat since dinner the night before) we treated ourselves to a cruelty-free feast!
We started with some ice-coffees while browsing the massive menu! This street was chalk full of vegan eateries but this place seemed to have the most options. My heart was set of some Vegan Pho...niente )O:
We were the only people in this place, and it was cute, and definately different from Seoul Loving Huts. Open, a bit dusty and you went up a frail spiral staircase to eat on a blacony overlooking Bui Vien street.
We started with two different spring rolls, one being the Bi Cuon (fresh with peel, tofu, and thyme) and the other being the Goi Cuon (fresh with mushrooms and vermicelli) each were 6,000 dong ($0.30) per piece. We bother enjoyed the Bi Cuon more (scallion poking out). It tasted fresher and the vegetables were distinctive. The tofu was creamy and blended very well with the vegetables, a simple honest roll!

We also ordered the Com Chien Hat Sen, which is a fried rice with lotus seeds (50,000 dong= $2.50). The dish has a lot of rice (not so much my alley) but I loved the hidden chunks of shitakes, pressed tofu, peas (man I love my peas), and the generous portion of lotus seeds. This was my second time having lotus seeds and they're similar to chestnuts  smaller, smoother, and nutty. And I have to say, the tomatoes were so sweetly fresh!!

A random picking was the Goi Nam Bao Ngu Rau Ram, a mushroom with flagrant knotweed salad (40,000dong= $2.00). We both had no idea what the hell knotweed might be and my parts were all too curious. The salad was hidden underneath layers of rice cake crackers and had lots of vegan ham in it. I'm not into the fake meat deal, frankly it creeps me out, but the knotweeds were plentiful and measured up quite well in the spiced red-vinegar sauce. ...

A little over a year ago, while in China I got into the spirit of hunting down veggies I've never seen or tasted before and tried playing around with them. One of these veggies was a wrinkled up warty green guy resembling a sick zucchini, bitter melon. I could never figure out what exactly I should do with it, I tried steaming, frying, even got desperate enough to batter it up and fry it...fail fail fail. I saw the Canh Kho Qua (bitter melon soup) and it was done. For only 35,000 dong ($1.55) I would be able (idealistically) get to crack the bitter melon code.
It was served sliced thinly in a simple broth of water, soy sauce, and black pepper. A few mushrooms and softened creamed tofu were thrown in but it was very straight forward. Bitter melon sticks true to it's name, it's bitter and a bit starchy and directed for those that like a mixture of bitter and sour. I liked it, but I doubt I'll go running to buy more bitter melon.

Saigon Vegan is good, and inexpensive, so high high points. It is part of the Loving Hut chain so I'm already a bit off put by it, but overall, it was good and is great to eat at with friends. Loads of dishes, options, and a wide spread of preferences (steamed veggies, fried rolls, noodles, rice, soups, etc.)

But the coffee....ooo that coffee^^*!~

Honest Loving Hut

Sunday afternoon I met up with Kia for a cellary exchange and dinner! I've heard raves about the Loving Hut in Itaewon (Honest) and I actually tried it out. The place is cute and...clean. I felt like I was entering a garden craft ranch straight out of a Martha Steward or Country Living magazine!
Kia and I weren't very hungry so we split the supreme burger and fries (I think somewhere around 14,500W). The place was essentially empty and really quiet, always appreciated on Sundays. It was humid, warm, and...a busy day.
When supreme burger came out, I was more than impressed. I'm not a burger girl, never really have been, but this was wonderfully plated. Clean large white dishes, delicately spread veggies, lots of different greens, colors...my eyes were feasting!
the supreme burger! (photo taken by VeganBeats)
It was more than enough and I feel well worth the price, though...it's damn difficult to eat. The patty was tofu and some sort of bean and the salsa sauce spreading was great, hell the bread was even great, not too heavy, light, airy...but the burger didn't stay solid. The patty broke eaily, the sauce spilt all over my hands...I felt like a toddler. The pesto was flavor packed, but...so dense, I kind of wish it was a bit saucier. The pumpkin was good, but a tad undercooked...and the potatoes...I wish they had a bit more crunch to them. I liked everything, but...some slight changes would make this plate measure up well next to how beautifully it was plated.
Kia and I eyed the dessert menu and had our hearts set on bingsu (빙수) a traditional and common Korean summer dessert/snack composed of crushed ice, frozen 떡, fruits, and sometimes ice cream...they were out )O: But we went with the rasberry chocolate ice-cream cake!!
rasberry chocolate ice-cream cake! (photo taken by VeganBeats)
They do look like swirly boobs...but this was wonderful! The cake was moist and the chocolate hinted with a teasing bitter, which paired very well with the rasberries! The weather was so hot, I was afraid of having melted ice-cream!

All in all, Honest is worth checking out. The ambiance of the place is peaceful, pleasant, and comforting. Next time though...I'm hoping for 빙수!!

How to get there:
Itaewon Station, Line 6, Exit 1.
Walk straight for about five minutes and turn right into the alleyway before "ABC mart." Walk up the hill for about 100 yards and Honest will be on your left on the second floor!!

This is the Honest blog!!

Vegan Whip Cream and...IPA!!

Man it's been a while! Internet is working towards some sort of manipulated "order" and my life plans are...getting slightly more solid. But only slightly.
A legit vacation is quicly approaching and I have plans set~ Vietnam~~
My vacation prior to this was at school numero uno and I didn't get very much notice so I spent a lot of it kicking it at home and...honeslty sleeping. This time, I'm going somewhere else in Asia and meeting up with a good buddy!
Plans are fuzzy, shooting more towards adventure. Motorbikes, exploring, beaching it, laughing, fruit nomming...living, loving...bliss!

Anyways...since last post, I've been everywhere, checking out shows, trying new restos, eating too much fruit, sweating new pimples....pics are still loading up (comp issues still....) But here are two sneak peaks.....
fruits and vegan whip cream!!! (photo taken by VeganBeats)
Went to a buffet (Loving Hut chain) in Gangnam and they had vegan whip cream...not one for sweets and fats but..hell....had to.

Also this past weekend FINALLY checked out the raved about 'Craftworks Taphouse & Bistro' near Noksapyeong station. The beer is brewed there, and...I heard rumors of an IPA.  I met up with Kia and Sean (it;s been ages) and caught up over more than a couple beers and had quite an adventure getting to them. (Missed the bus, traffic jam prevented the right drop off, wandered an extra mile...oy oy) but it was worth it.
Upon landing, I already knew what to get and anxiously waited for this hoppy lovely beverage to touch my lips and...flood my mind with memories and taste buds with joy.
IPA!! (photo taken by VeganBeats)

and YUM!
BQ crew back home...wish we were together knocking these back again....cyclono anyone?
Finding good quality beer is not...an easy trade here. I never drink beer here, not because I hate it, but because when it comes to beer, I've been a tad spoiled. Vermont has local breweries, brown ales, IPA's, home brewing hoppiness...here, Hite and Cass just don;t do it for me. What I'd do for a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale....le sigh

Anyways, back to it. This weekend was filled with two beautiful and wonderful Seouls, Kia and Sean. Loads of love to them for...always being so kind, generous, genuine, and fun!!

Until next time... more pics and more updates!!!

Thiendang Loving Hut

A while ago, I met up for a relaxing dinner at a rather new Loving Hut, Thiendang. Loving Huts are all vegan joints, widespread throughout Asia and the states and this one offers Thai inspired dishes!
Here are some poor quality photos of all the plates ordered...
Kia's sweet and spicy soy chicken~7,000W and fries~1,500W  (photo taken by VeganBeats)
Sean's curry catsu (soy steak)~ 6,900W (photo taken by VeganBeats)
my Tuscan salad~8,000W (photo taken by VeganBeats)
My salad was HUGE! Way more than I expected and filled to the brim with all sorts of veggies. There were baby greens, sprouts, romaine, iceberg, tomato, olives, roasted herbed potatoes..etc.

Apologies for the poor photo quality.

Anyways...Thiendang now offers pho and a variety of Vegan ice-cream (all Turtle Mountain.) There is a small bakery filled with breads and pastries that the family makes. Like all Loving Huts, there is a small grocery section where you can stock up on veggie meats, organic teas, etc.

Here are directions:
Namseong Station line 7, go out exit 3 and walk straight for about 3-5 minutes, it will be on your right, right next to Elliot cafe.

Jaxs got the spicey noodle soup...she's always raving about it!! It looks like it has a broth similar to soon dubu....

After Loving Hut Jaxs and George peaced to do some responsible lesson planning...Rachel, Stephanie and I took advantage of being in Sinchon and were on a quest for coffee and window shopping...we ended up kicking it at a coffee house for a couple hours...
Rachel ended up peacing later and Stephanie and I wandered the streets of Sinchon...stumbled on lots of prize game things and this interesting bar

I definately want to wander around Sinchon again, there's a lot to see....
