Vietnam: Lost shots...

I can't believe that a month ago today, I was flying to the land of Vietnam. A country filled with a infinite amount of discovery, sweat, and adventure. Truly a land and experience that has left me yearning for more.
Here are some shots that I gathered while wandering the streets of Hanoi.

The only streets in Seoul lined with trees are Garusogil...But in Hanoi~

spiced and pickled fruits (photo taken by VeganBeats)
I can't believe I didn't write about this stand. There were over a dozen different fruits just lying in the open, not fresh but flavored and spiced. There were papayas, plums, berries, mangoes, etc...all pickled and sprinkled with spice. Back home, I would stock up on Trader Joe's brand spicy dried mangoes and, when I saw fresh spiced ones...my hands were already reaching for cash.

Verdict: sweet and rather ripe mango, it was a bit snappy, but there was a sweet limey pickling with some dashes of heat that were interesting. These flavors bounced on my tongue and even though my senses halted a bit, I was thinking about this mango so many times throughout the trip...next time. (Aha, another reason!)

     ~~again, Vietnam I miss you~~

Soon to come a post with helpful hints, recommendations, resources, etc~~

Hanoi: Shopping and Galavanting in the Old Quarter

The Old Quarter in Hanoi is a pretty busy and bustling place, tightly adjoined stores nuzzle into one another selling things from knock off sandals, stamps, fruits and veggies...it's a market, a bar central area, a cafe zone- tourist kazaa. Even though full of visitors, there's a lot to see here, that's worth wandering through. Ani and I did hours of walking, shopping, coffee drinking, kicking it through this area...here's some photo porn:

Nick Lachey...he's back (photo taken by VeganBeats)
The signs reminded me of my time in Changchun, celebrates copy and pasted onto billboards or signs, shamelessly 'promoting' hair styles, to watches, to douches. I haven't heard of any 98degrees stuff going down since the late 90's...good to see Nick Lachey still has it going on for hair shops.      I love the produce section of any store, but mostly of markets. I liek the yelling, the haggling, the ordering and sloppy shifting of veggies. It's dirty, stressful, and...I like the rush. At least, that's what I'm used to, and think of when it comes to markets...Vietnam, chill produce sales. Was it strange I felt...calm?

donuts (DON'T BUY= unsanitary and poor quality) photo taken by VeganBeats
In the folds of these markets are eateries, and even though this gets me all sad to see anything crammed in a tank, for those foodies out there- if you're going to consume animals, try to be as local as possible.

crabs...)O: (photo taken by VeganBeats)
I have to admit, we all know the vegan deal is staying, just about the only lifestyle I'll commit whole-heartedly to, but local, local is so important. I realize, recognize, and accept that vegan is something I have chosen, and not everyone is going to do my lifestyle...hell if I'd do theirs- I try to push for local. Kepp it fresh and community based if you want to put these living things in your body.

Fresher~> less distance traveled (by theory)~> (hopefully) less harmful to your body + it's better for your neighbors, community, and family.

I miss fruit....fresh, voluptuous, juicy, sexy, tropical- exotic fruits. Korea, I love you, but the apples, melons, pears, nectarines- I got these in the states. Show me something different, tease my taste-buds will ya?!!
jackfruit (photo taken by VeganBeats)
dragon fruit and rambutan...chillen, no big (photo taken by VeganBeats)
I HIGHLY recommend getting  a passion-fruit. Wrinkly and not very pretty on the outside, get a knife, grab a spoon, slice this baby into two and spoon some of that tart sweet juicy goodness.
do your tongue a flavor, have a passion-fruit (photo taken by VeganBeats)
So these beautiful fruits, the cows, birds, homeless animals )O:~ nom on these...in an ideal next life- I'll be one of these (I vote free rolling cow or flock away bird) kicking it in Vietnam~~~
"Ah, thanks for the dragon fruit, oh mangosteen and passion-fruit; don't mind if I do..."

Downtown Hanoi, quán ăn ngon (Delicious Restaraunt), Hồ Hoàn Kiếm (lake of the Restored Sword), and some sightseeing

Waking up early, the morning began with french pressed coffee and a fired mission to schedule our Vietnam holiday. There were many goals we had in mind; Ho Chi Minh City, Mui Ne and Ha Long bay. Ho Chi Minh city (Saigon) and Mui Ne are in the Southern part of Vietnam and Ha Long Bay in North of Hanoi, we had ten days to work with and a lot to see. Tracking down hotels and with a loose schedule we headed over to downtown Hanoi to meet with our travel agent. Within an hour we had a flight (roundtrip) booked to Ho Chi Minh city, train tickets to Mui Ne, and a deluxe 2 night cruise set up, all for $400!! Our Ha long bay trip was through a deal, all but three companies go to a set area of islands on the bay, our company would be going to nearly ALL of the islands...credit cards swiped!
After we rode over to  quán ăn ngon, which means "delicious restaurant!" The concept behind it is bringing street food inside. Multiple stands are organized in a large circle surrounding family style tables and tight seats. Several tarps protect both the stands and the eating area from rain...it was packed full of locals~ you can't go wrong~

We started off with Trà đá, which is an iced green tea harvested from the second flush of sencha. It's mild and invigorating, even a little citrusy! This tea is very common in Vietnam, and in Japan!
Trà đá (photo taken by VeganBeats)
The menu was very extensive. Just scrolling over the surrouding stands your mind tends to travel with all these options. Finding vegan was rather difficult. Vietnamese culture uses everything, every bit and piece of animal is used and not wasted. I greatly respect that and truthfully find it admirable. If you are to eat an animal, honor it, respect it; America tends to through pieces out...)O:
"Speaking" with the servers and playing some dramatic cherades, we were able to find some things that I could have and were still very much Vietnam. I want to experience their cuisine...if I came here 11 years ago, things would have been different!
Vinegars and heat smoldered the air, and sounds of chopping knives and sizzling pans teased our senses as we anxiously awaited our choosings. Being so busy, there was a bit of a wait, but this also meant loads of beautifully plated meals whizzing by our tables, as if sticking their tongues out.
The first dish to come to our table was the nom lac salad, which is a papaya salad. There were generous amounts of fresh shredded papaya, carrots, bean sprouts, mint, peanuts, and fried onions. The dressing was some sort of sweet vinegar and lime juice...refreshing and plentiful!

Next came the vegan and simple dau ran, which is a pan fried tofu. This was served with thai basil, sliced cucumbers, a small sweet lime, and soy sauce instead of fish sauce. Not out of this world, but satisfying!

Ani's dish was stunning to look st, complex and colorful! She got a dish where egg eas fried into a thin pancake and filled with steamed veggies, beansprouts, and shrimp! The dish also had fresh thai basil, lettuce greens, and soft rice wraps. On the side was a hot sauce.
gorgeous really, all that color! (photo taken by VeganBeats)
Our neighbors were drinking this colorful concoction that I had to capture!
agar agar jellies on the bottom, sweet beans and berries topped with coconut milk and loads of ice! (photo taken by VeganBeats)
The idea and understanding of this place is to fill up, order loads, and share! The family sitting next to us was doing just that!!
happy nomming neighbor! (photo taken by VeganBeats)
Monsoon season is occurring in Vietnam as well so every couple minutes there would be a downpour and the smells of the city would release...I'm glad we were surrounded by spices and cooking! This was a dining experience...check it out!

Next was exploring! The city is alive at the start of sunrise and full of tourists. Everyone is selling something, offering motorbike rides, bike rides...offers to fix your shoes. (I was wearing shit-cheap Old Navy babies...fix a flip flop?!!!) We were int he old quarter and...here are some shots (lots of shops, sellers, etc.)

The old quarter is close to Hồ Hoàn Kiếm (lake of the Restored Sword) and legend has it that in that lake a century year old turtle resides there.
~Emperor Le Loi handed a victorious magical sword called the 'Heaven's Will' to the Golden Turtle God, Kim Qui. This sword brought victory to Le Loi during the revolt against the Chinese Ming Dynasty. And the sword was passed at this very lake!

There were children laughing and playing all over this place, I loved the rocks piled up by the bridges gate!

Sitting on a bench, Ani and I soaked up the sounds of the city and simply were 'being.' Groups of tourists were guided down the lake by French speaking locals, and women sold bags of cane juice, the motorbikes speeding on the roads behind us...looking at the time, it was early. The days are full already, and I'm really living it!
It's barely been 48 hours and I'm already falling in a comforting love with this place!

Garak Market, family times, and the park bunny^^*!~

A truly relaxing Sunday...when this day has been generally understood as the day of rest, I can't recall when I actually had a lazy fun Sunday. Lazy being an issue of semantics really. I allowed myself to sleep in, actually sleep in. Shut off as many stress points as possible and when I woke up I decided to hit up the subway for Garak market. A subway station and destination I've always wanted to explore!!
The day was hott, and the market essentially empty when I got there. There were several vendors...and as the day went on, more people started wandering.

I stumbled upon a warehouse FULL of watermelons! (photo taken by VeganBeats)
colorful veggies ^^* (photo taken by VeganBeats)
the roots, sweet potatoes, lotus root, sweet potatoe...(photo taken by VeganBeats)
After the market, I trucked around my new purchases (man watermelons are HEAVY!) and went over to 송파 and visited my 이모!! Never took time to soak in the walk to her place....look at her entrance!
We caught up on the past and ate watermelon and then decided to make 호떡(hoedoek) that flat fried pancake filled with cinnamon sugary goodness...no street vendor for me, I got this jam down. I'll get the exact recipe soon...but here's the general process in picture terms!

the filling! cinnamon, ground nuts, sugar (photo taken by VeganBeats)
Make some dumplings and fry up...flatten with that weird spatula in the top right (photo taken by VeganBeats)
Hello 호떡!! (photo taken by VeganBeats)
After packaging these up, my 이모 her husband and I went over to Olympic park to enjoy the breeze, drink some coffee and soak in our surrounding. The sun was out, a light breeze filled in from the skies and it was cool. I could smell grass, here people laughing, children playing, and was just chilling when all of sudden!!!
this guy found me!! (photo taken by VeganBeats)
Apparently, this little guy lives in the park...was very calm, super cute, and... well...animals only improve my day!! He looks like someone smeared some liquid liner on him!!
too cute ^^*!~ (photo taken by VeganBeats)

Plastic menu options!! One of my many favorite things about Korea, you can see what you want...AND the food looks like what you order. When I was in China, I'd order things that NEVER looked like their picture.

A really spicey fish stew/soup, Amy said it's amazing. So omnivores...go for it!!

 Cute baby shoes!!!

Amy and I split one!!
Dondaemun and Nangdaemun was so much fun, and I have a lot to credit Amy for that. Saw a lot of things, spent a lot of money (eeep) and left with some great buys!!
